Check JavaScript

Is JavaScript enabled in my browser?

JavaScript now controls numerous interactive features on modern websites. Hardly any site can do without it these days! The tool BrowserDetails.org shows you directly whether it can run in this browser - in other words, whether it is active or inactive.

What websites need JavaScript for

Menus, forms, maps, video players and webmail mostly work through JavaScript. If it is switched off or blocked by an extension (a browser plugin or antivirus software), buttons may have no effect, for example, or parts of a page may not load at all.

The check could not be simpler: a small script changes the status to “enabled” after the page loads. If JavaScript remains switched off, the server-rendered version continues to show the corresponding notice. This makes it clear that JS is not running in the browser.

Allow JavaScript selectively rather than everywhere

If you restrict JavaScript for privacy or security reasons, you do not necessarily have to allow it on every site. Many browsers and extensions allow rules for individual domains.

If only one particular website is not working, it is worth checking content blockers and site settings first. A complete browser reinstallation is usually not necessary. However, we recommend leaving JavaScript enabled, since hardly any site can do without it these days.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The main points, summarised briefly.

Is JavaScript dangerous?

JavaScript (JS) is a perfectly normal part of the web, just like HTML or CSS. Risks are more likely to arise from faulty or malicious websites, which are mostly found in the “seedier corners” of the web. An up-to-date browser and caution when visiting unfamiliar sites are therefore important.

Why can JavaScript be blocked even when the browser allows it?

Extensions, security programs (antivirus software, for example) or special privacy modes can place additional restrictions on JS scripts.

Does BrowserDetails.org work without JavaScript?

Yes, basic browser detection still works. However, screen details, the copy function and some convenience features are then no longer available.
